Mexican Net Hammocks – Handwoven in Yucatán for Centuries

The Mexican net hammock is widely considered the most comfortable hammock in the world. For centuries, Mayan families in Yucatán have been handweaving these unique hammocks – a tradition passed down from generation to generation. At MacaMex, we've been importing directly from the villages around Mérida since 1999. We know the weavers personally, understand what makes a quality hamaca, and bring only hammocks to Europe that we'd use ourselves.

What Makes Mexican Net Hammocks So Special?

The difference lies in the weaving technique. While Brazilian hammocks are made from continuous fabric, Mexican hammocks are woven from hundreds or thousands of individual threads into an elastic net. This so-called diamond weave – named after the characteristic rhombus shape – conforms to your body like no other hammock.

In Yucatán, people have slept in these hammocks for generations. Not just out of tradition, but because it's simply the best way to sleep in a tropical climate. The open weave allows air to circulate, keeping your body cool. And once you've experienced lying diagonally in an authentic Mayan hammock – head to one side, feet to the other – you'll understand why many Mexicans have traded their beds for hammocks.

Handcrafted in Yucatán

Our Mexican net hammocks come from small villages around Mérida, the capital of Yucatán. The weavers work from home, often while their children sleep or attend school. Using a traditional shuttle, they connect cotton threads into a tight-knit net – stitch by stitch, hour after hour. Depending on the size, creating a single hammock takes several days to weeks.

This handwork explains why every Mexican hammock is unique. Colors vary slightly, patterns are never exactly identical. And that's precisely the charm: you're not buying an industrial product, but a piece of Mexican craftsmanship.

Why Mexican Hammocks Are More Comfortable

The net of a Mexican hammock can be stretched widthwise – it adapts to your body size and lying position. Where a fabric hammock would pull or create folds, the net simply gives way. Weight distributes evenly, creating no pressure points. Many of our customers describe the feeling as "floating" – and some who've struggled with back problems for years now sleep better in a hammock than they ever did in a bed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mexican Net Hammocks

Why are Mexican hammocks more comfortable than others?

The secret lies in the net structure. Unlike fabric hammocks made from solid weave, a Mexican net hammock is woven from hundreds of individual threads. This elastic net conforms to your body – it yields where it should and supports where it must. The result: no pressure points, even weight distribution, a feeling of lying on clouds.

How do I lie correctly in a Mexican hammock?

Diagonally – that's the whole secret. Don't lie lengthwise in the hammock, but at an angle: head to one side, feet to the other. Then the net stretches flat and you lie almost horizontally, without the typical banana shape. The Maya have slept this way for centuries. Once you understand it, you'll never want to lie any other way.

Where exactly do the hammocks come from?

Our Mexican net hammocks come from the Yucatán Peninsula in southeastern Mexico. Most are woven in small villages around Mérida – places like Tixkokob, Teabo, or Chumayel, known for their hammock craftsmanship. The weavers work from home using traditional techniques passed down through generations in their families.

How long does it take to make a Mexican hammock?

That depends on size and quality. A simple single hammock requires about 30 hours of handwork. A large family hammock with dense weave can take several days. Our jumbo hammocks with extremely high thread count keep a weaver busy for up to two weeks. Each thread is individually knotted – this isn't mass production, it's genuine craftsmanship.

What does "diamond weave" mean for net hammocks?

The diamond weave describes the characteristic weaving pattern of Mexican net hammocks. The threads are knotted to create small diamond-shaped openings. This technique makes the net elastic and enables the typical body conforming. The finer the threads and tighter the pattern, the softer the hammock feels.

What size do I need?

In Mexico, there are traditional size designations: Single (one person, compact), Double (spacious for one, works for two), Matrimonial (the "marriage bed" – luxurious for two), Family (2-3 people), and Jumbo (the largest and densest). Basic rule: Better one size up than too small. In a Mexican hammock, you lie diagonally, and for that you need width.

Can I sleep in a Mexican hammock?

Yes – and many of our customers do exactly that. In Mexico, the hammock is traditionally the sleeping place, not the bed. The net distributes weight so evenly that no pressure points develop. Lying diagonally, the spine stays straight. For permanent sleeping, we recommend a Matrimonial, Family, or Jumbo – these sizes offer enough room to move during the night.

Cotton or nylon – which is better?

For home use and maximum comfort: cotton. It feels softer, is skin-friendly, and doesn't get uncomfortably hot in the sun. Nylon makes sense for commercial use (hotels, resorts) or when the hammock stays outside permanently – it dries faster and is more resistant to moisture. But the lying comfort of cotton is noticeably superior.

How do I care for a Mexican net hammock?

Cotton is easy to care for if you follow a few rules: Bring it in or cover it when it rains – cotton doesn't like prolonged moisture. Wash at 30°C on gentle cycle, without fabric softener. Dry in the shade, not in direct sunlight. Follow these guidelines and you'll enjoy your hammock for many years. With proper care, our Mexican net hammocks last 10 years and longer.

Why buy from MacaMex?

We've specialized in Mexican net hammocks since 1999 – an Austrian family business, not a mass retailer. We know the weaving families in Yucatán personally, some for over 20 years. We import directly, without middlemen. Every hammock is inspected by us. And when you have questions, we advise you personally – not a call center, but people who've been lying in these hammocks for decades.
